I believe it was February 12, I was flipping channels between MSNNBC and FOXNEWS. I caught my favorite Liberal talking head, Chris Matthews, chatting with Keith Olbermann. Olbermann remarked that, Obama's speaking skills made it a good idea for other speakers to appear before him, instead of after. Matthews agreed and followed up by saying;
“I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barak Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often. No, seriously. It’s a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country.” (read this quote again, slower - think of the words he uses to describe a speech from a politician)
Referring to McCain’s speech, he said;
“But I just think that McCain's problem is he's over 70, he's standing there with John Warner, who's much older than him. He's standing with Tom Davis, who's retiring. He looks like an army in retreat in Virginia.”
Although I hate it when Conservatives fall into the trap of thinking they have to qualify their position (a favorite Liberal ploy to deflect from a point they are destined to lose) by putting the Conservative on defense, here I go… I watched that speech, as well as McCain’s and others. I have no qualm with the notion that Obama “delivers” a great speech, the best of any of them in fact. He may be the best ever. But “delivering words” is no where near like “delivering the goods”. Does anyone really, really, not know this is typical shallow "political speak" (lies in your world and mine)?
I can’t remember when last I felt that thrill going up my leg, as Chris Matthews talks about; certainly not from any politician anytime after I started to pay attention to what was going on around me... But that my friends, is still another example of the difference between a Liberal/Socialist/Communist type and a U.S. Conservative. Chris Matthews and those like him are not acting, it is who they are; they are heart thinkers. Heart thinkers are overcome with feelings and emotion, leaving reasoned thinking behind. They are supported by the unknowing and the selfish. And so it goes...
Wait a minute... If Matthews is a "heart thinker", then how do I explain his comment about his problem with John McCain being old???
